Why a physical calligraphy class offers so much more than an online course

Why choose a physical calligraphy workshop?
When I decided I wanted to learn calligraphy, I was in the midst of a burnout and could barely tolerate any stimuli. An online calligraphy course seemed exactly what I needed at that moment: the peace and quiet to practice at my own pace, without having to interact with others. Because at that moment, I was more than enough on my own.
Personal guidance: the secret to faster learning
But honestly, it was a quest. I didn't know if I had the right pen, if I was holding it correctly, if the nib was at the right angle on the paper, why the ink wouldn't stick to my nib and therefore I couldn't write with it... Things I can explain in five seconds now, I had to figure out for myself back then. And that frustrated me. The hurdle to quit was high..., and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's run into this problem while learning calligraphy.
These days, I still take online courses to continue developing myself, but the big difference is this: I now have a solid foundation. I know how to hold a pen, and a few words from the online instructor are enough to tell me how to proceed. And that's exactly what I want for my students.
The right directions make the difference
During my in-person calligraphy workshops, I can offer exactly what many people struggle with online: personalized guidance. I observe your handwriting, your pen grip, and your posture. Small adjustments can make a world of difference. I regularly correct the position of a pen, and suddenly the thick shadow lines fall precisely in the right place within a letter. Such a small adjustment has an immediate and dramatic effect.
Everyone has a different starting point, and I take that into account. As a primary school teacher with almost 25 years of teaching experience, I'm used to providing differentiated instruction. Whether you're new to calligraphy or have been practicing for a while, I'll adapt my instructions to your level and help you progress from there. I'll provide personalized feedback and set achievable goals so you can go home feeling proud and satisfied at the end of the lesson.
More than just technology: an experience of peace and focus
Of course, calligraphy is about technique. But it's also an experience. In my lessons, I create an atmosphere of calm, focus, and connection. We work with concentration, but there's also room for conviviality—with a cup of coffee or tea, cookies, and a chat. I use a desktop camera so everyone can see exactly what I'm doing on the large screen at the front of the room. This way, you can watch clearly, even if you're not sitting right next to me.
What I often hear from participants is that they feel welcome and seen. That it's nice to be able to ask questions, make mistakes, and practice together. And I love that, because that's exactly what I want to create: a safe place to learn.
Learning together: the power of a workshop
In a face-to-face class, you'll meet other people who, like you, are curious about calligraphy. Some just want a fun afternoon with a friend. Others come alone, looking for a new hobby, something relaxing, something for themselves. And then there are the die-hards: people who have already taught themselves everything on YouTube or bought online courses, but have run into problems.
What do all these people have in common? They want to move forward. And learning together is so valuable. You learn not only from me, but also from each other. You hear how others struggle with exactly what you're facing... and sometimes the solution simply comes from the person next to you.
The right materials: a good start is half the job
Another advantage of an in-person workshop: you'll be working with the right materials right away. No bad pen holders or unsuitable paper, no hassle with the wrong nibs. And if you bring your own pen, I'll check it's properly adjusted right away. This prevents frustration and increases your writing enjoyment.
Online is fine — but in-person is more
I believe online calligraphy courses are certainly valuable. However, a face-to-face lesson is incredibly valuable for beginners: you experience direct guidance and therefore learn faster and more focused, making the chance of dropping out much smaller.
My mission is to let people experience the beauty of calligraphy. Not just as an art form, but also as a way to slow down, pay attention, and create something beautiful with your own hands.
Reserve your spot and experience it yourself
